美國(guó)華人生物學(xué)家協(xié)會(huì)名錄成立于1998年，主要成員是自上世紀(jì)80年代起從中國(guó)大陸赴美留學(xué)獲博士學(xué)位、在北美大學(xué)或研究機(jī)構(gòu)任助理教授以上職位的華裔生物學(xué)者以及在工業(yè)界做到項(xiàng)目領(lǐng)導(dǎo)以上的華人。該協(xié)會(huì)最初命名為“吳瑞協(xié)會(huì)”，以表彰康奈爾大學(xué)教授吳瑞在促進(jìn)中美生命科學(xué)交流中作出的杰出貢獻(xiàn)。

  改革開(kāi)放初期，當(dāng)鄧小平提出擴(kuò)大派遣留學(xué)生的想法后，吳瑞立即向中國(guó)教育部建議：世界生命科學(xué)領(lǐng)域發(fā)展很快，中國(guó)要盡快培養(yǎng)這一領(lǐng)域的年輕科技人才。為此，他向美國(guó)數(shù)十所一流大學(xué)介紹中國(guó)的改革開(kāi)放，并說(shuō)服它們接受中國(guó)留學(xué)生，最終促成了 CUSBEA項(xiàng)目，也就是常說(shuō)的“吳瑞項(xiàng)目”的實(shí)施。項(xiàng)目自1981年連續(xù)8年共派出425人，如今這些人中的很多已成為當(dāng)今世界生命科學(xué)領(lǐng)域的頂尖專(zhuān)家，為促進(jìn)我國(guó)基因工程和生物技術(shù)的發(fā)展起了重要作用。

  吳瑞協(xié)會(huì)在華人生物學(xué)家中的影響越來(lái)越廣泛，并于2004年更名為華人生物學(xué)家協(xié)會(huì)，成為代表北美等地區(qū)3000多位華裔生物學(xué)精英的專(zhuān)業(yè)組織。很多著名華裔生物學(xué)家，如美國(guó)科學(xué)院院士王曉東、美國(guó)文理科學(xué)院院士袁鈞英、霍華德休斯醫(yī)學(xué)研究院研究員許田、耶魯大學(xué)干細(xì)胞項(xiàng)目主任林海帆、哈佛大學(xué)醫(yī)學(xué)院教授施楊等，都曾在協(xié)會(huì)理事會(huì)任職。
